Prior to the Industrial Revolution art was centralized around the concept of the ideal and the absolute, as witnessed, for example, in the history of religious painting. As western societies became more industrialized and rational the rise of individuation lead to what Nietzsche called “nihilism” or the multiplicities of causation theories as centers. Viewed by many philosophers as the last metaphysician replaced the concept of absolute with values. According to Nietzsche, metaphysics be it in religious ideals or Truth takes man away from thinking about the earth and the need to remedy the ails of earth. My paintings explore the conflict of physics and metaphysics as it has been played out through the entire twentieth century.
